PETTYJOHN Transcribed by Lyde. Note: this is abstracted data from the original biography. [Surnames: ESPY, HANCOCK, PETTYJOHN, QUINN, TODD] OLIVER J. PETTYJOHN of Farmington Twp. is a Census enumerator and veterinary surgeon. He was born near Tremont, IL, son of James S. and Mary Ann Quinn. The father, also a veterinary surgeon, was born in Browning Co., OH and the grandfather, James Pettyjohn, followed the same profession and owned a large estate in Ohio. The mother was Miss Mary Ann Quinn, daughter of Elijah Quinn, and he too, had followed the profession of veterinary surgery. Our subject's father moved to Illinois and died from the effects of a kick received from a horse when Oliver was very young. The mother married secondly and has one child by this union - Katie. Our subject's parents had 4 children: Oliver James, Luella, Alice and William. Luella is wife of Joseph Hancock, a prosperous farmer at Groveland, IL. Alice is the wife of Smith Hancock and lives near Groveland, IL. William is a drug clerk in Kansas City. Our subject entered the Illinois Academy at Jacksonville , graduating with honors in 1871. He married at age 28 years to Miss Nancy M. Todd, daughter of James and Anna M. (Espy) Todd. She was born near Springfield, OH and came with her parents to Illinois when a young girl. She was educated at Morton High School and later taught there in the Grammar Dept. To Mr. and Mrs. Pettyjohn were born 3 children: William, Don Q. and Charles. They sold their farm and settled in Farmington in 1884.
